Moderna and Merck's Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough: Personalised Treatment Shows Promising Results
A major breakthrough in cancer treatment has been announced by Moderna and Merck. The companies have developed a personalised cancer vaccine called Intismeran Autogene, which has shown positive results in a late-stage clinical trial for melanoma.
The trial involved 1,137 high-risk patients with stage IIB-IV melanoma that had been surgically removed. These patients were divided into two groups: one received up to nine doses of Keytruda (an immunotherapy drug) plus the personalised vaccine, while the other group only received Keytruda alone.
The results showed that the combination of Keytruda and Intismeran Autogene reduced skin cancer recurrence by a significant margin compared to using Keytruda alone. In fact, the trial found that the risk of recurrence or death was 49% lower after five years for patients who received both treatments.
This breakthrough has important implications for melanoma treatment. Unlike conventional vaccines, which are designed to protect against infections, Intismeran Autogene is developed using information from an individual patient's tumour. Doctors analyse the tumour tissue to identify specific mutations and create a tailored mRNA vaccine that trains the patient's immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells.
