Moderna and Merck's Cancer Vaccine Combo Shows Promising Results
A significant breakthrough in cancer treatment has been announced by Moderna and Merck after their Phase 3 trial delivered positive initial results. The combination of pembrolizumab, a monoclonal antibody drug, and intismeran autogene, a personalized mRNA-based cancer vaccine, showed improved outcomes for patients with high-risk melanoma.
The INTerpath-001 trial included 1089 patients with resected stage II, IV melanoma. The results demonstrated that the combination therapy provided 'clinically meaningful improvement' over pembrolizumab alone in preventing recurrence and improving metastasis-free survival.
This is the first Phase 3 evidence to show the benefit of personalized, mRNA-based cancer vaccines. The safety profile of the combination therapy was consistent with previous studies.
