Moderna and Merck's Cancer Vaccine Partnership Shows Promising Results
Moderna's shares skyrocketed after announcing initial results from a study of its experimental cancer treatment, intismeran. The mRNA-based vaccine is being developed in partnership with Merck and aims to be tailored to individual patients based on unique mutations within their tumors.
The companies are pairing intismeran with Keytruda, an immunotherapy drug made by Merck. A study compared the use of intismeran and Keytruda together against using Keytruda alone in melanoma patients. The results showed that patients who received the combination lived longer without cancer returning or metastasizing than those who got Keytruda alone.
The companies plan to present full data at an upcoming international medical meeting, but have already announced a significant breakthrough in their research. With this news, Moderna's shares more than doubled in value, reflecting investors' optimism about the potential of intismeran and its partnership with Merck.
