Moderna and Merck's mRNA Cancer Therapy Posts Positive Phase 3 Results
Moderna and Merck have made significant progress in their investigational personalized mRNA cancer therapy, intismeran autogene. In a Phase 3 study, the treatment showed positive results when combined with Keytruda (pembrolizumab) in patients with high-risk melanoma. The individualized therapy is designed to help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells based on each patient's tumor characteristics.
According to Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel, the companies are moving quickly toward discussions with regulators while preparing detailed findings for presentation to the medical community. Bancel stated that teams began preparing portions of the FDA submission before receiving the Phase 3 results.
The therapy is being studied in patients whose melanoma has been surgically removed and demonstrated a clinically meaningful improvement compared with Keytruda alone in those with completely resected Stage IIB-IV melanoma. The FDA has not approved the treatment yet, but Moderna and Merck intend to file for approval as quickly as possible.
The development represents a significant expansion of Moderna's mRNA platform beyond infectious disease vaccines. Bancel emphasized that manufacturing individualized medicine presents unique challenges due to the need for producing limited doses specifically for each patient.
