Moderna and Merck have made a significant breakthrough in cancer treatment with their personalized vaccine, known as intismeran autogene. This mRNA-based therapy has shown promise in preventing the recurrence and spread of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

The Phase 3 trial involved over 1,000 patients with high-risk melanoma who had undergone surgery but were still at risk of their disease returning. The early results showed that the treatment extended the time patients remained cancer-free, but experts caution that the full results have not been released yet.

However, longer-term data from an earlier trial found that adding the vaccine to Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda cut the risk of melanoma recurrence by half and reduced the risk of it spreading by 59%. The combination also showed no new or increased side effects.

The vaccine works by using mRNA technology to target specific mutations in a patient's tumor. Each jab is customized based on the genetic characteristics of an individual patient's cancer cells, making it a highly personalized treatment.
