Moderna and Merck's mRNA Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Late-Stage Melanoma Trial
Moderna and Merck have announced promising results for their mRNA-based cancer vaccine intismeran, which combines with existing immunotherapy Keytruda to improve outcomes for melanoma patients. The trial involved 1,137 people with stage 2 to stage 4 melanoma who received surgery and were then randomly assigned to receive either the combination of therapies or Keytruda alone.
The results showed that those receiving intismeran and Keytruda lived longer without recurrence of their cancer and had fewer instances of it spreading compared to those receiving only Keytruda. This is a significant benefit for patients with melanoma, who often face high rates of recurrence and metastasis.
Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel explained that intismeran teaches the immune system about the specific mutations in each patient's cancer, allowing it to recognize and target the tumor cells more effectively. The mRNA platform used by Moderna enables rapid generation of genetic sequences, which is essential for scaling up personalized cancer treatment approaches.
The companies hope that these results will pave the way for approval of intismeran as a companion therapy to Keytruda, potentially transforming the treatment landscape for melanoma patients. Moderna is also exploring using intismeran alone in earlier stage cancers and has ongoing studies in kidney, pancreas, bladder, and lung cancer.
