Moderna and Merck's Personalized Cancer Vaccine Secures First Late-Stage Trial Success
Moderna and Merck's joint effort in developing a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine has achieved significant success in a late-stage clinical trial. The vaccine, called 'intismeran', was tested on over 1,100 patients with high-risk melanoma who had undergone surgical removal. Researchers divided the participants into two groups: one receiving intismeran plus Merck's immunotherapy 'Keytruda' and another receiving Keytruda alone.
The combination therapy successfully extended recurrence-free survival compared to Keytruda alone, meeting its primary endpoint in a Phase 3 trial. The vaccine also met the secondary endpoint of preventing cancer from spreading to other organs.
Intismeran is a 'personalized therapeutic vaccine' that works by identifying unique mutations in each patient's cancer cells and creating a customized mRNA vaccine to target those mutations. This approach allows for a tailored treatment plan for each individual, unlike conventional vaccines.
