Moderna and Merck's Personalized Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Late-Stage Trial
After a decade of setbacks, researchers at Moderna and Merck have made a breakthrough in cancer treatment. On August 28, 2026, they announced that their personalized mRNA-based vaccine had successfully completed a late-stage clinical trial in patients with localized melanoma.
The vaccine, known as intismeran autogene, is designed to teach the immune system to recognize the unique signature of each patient's tumor. In a study involving over 1,000 people, it helped prevent tumors from returning or the disease from spreading when combined with immunotherapy.
Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel compared the news to the moment in late 2020 when the company released the results of its COVID-19 vaccine trial. He said 'This was the moment we had worked incredibly hard for.' The initial emotions quickly gave way to practical tasks, preparing the full study data and presenting it at an international oncology conference.
The success was the result of a collaboration that has lasted about ten years. Moderna and Merck share the project's costs and future profits, with Merck paying Moderna $200 million upfront in 2016 and another $250 million in 2022. The vaccine is created using a sample of each patient's tumor and directs the immune system toward mutations specific to that person's cancer cells.
