Moderna-Merck Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough Promises Billions in Sales
Moderna and Merck's cancer vaccine breakthrough has brought hope to patients after over a century of failed attempts. The mRNA-based vaccine, known as intismeran autogene, trains the immune system to attack cancer cells by targeting mutations unique to each patient's tumors. In a trial of more than 1,000 patients with localized melanoma, the vaccine kept tumors from coming back or spreading.
The companies have been working on this project for over 10 years and have invested heavily in the research. Merck paid $200 million upfront in 2016 and another $250 million in 2022 to partner with Moderna. The vaccine uses mRNA technology, which allows it to target dozens of mutations and provide a higher chance of success.
The results are promising, with Wall Street analysts estimating sales of over $1 billion by 2030 and $3 billion by 2035. However, the companies still have work to do in testing the vaccine's effectiveness in cancers with fewer mutations, such as lung, kidney, and pancreatic cancer.
