Moderna-Merck Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough Raises Hopes for Personalized Treatment
A major breakthrough in cancer treatment has been achieved by Moderna and Merck's personalized vaccine approach. The treatment, known as intismeran autogene, is designed to teach a patient's immune system to recognize mutations specific to their cancer and target cells carrying them.
In a Phase 3 study of 1,137 patients whose tumors had been surgically removed but who remained at high risk of recurrence, the combination of intismeran autogene with Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda significantly reduced the risk of melanoma returning or spreading. The companies reported that no new safety concerns were identified in the study.
Moderna President Stephen Hoge said results from numerous trials are expected over the next year or two, including studies involving patients with non-small cell lung cancer, bladder and kidney cancers, and pancreatic and stomach cancers. BioNTech and Roche are also developing a rival individualized mRNA treatment called autogene cevumeran.
The breakthrough has revived investor interest in mRNA technology beyond infectious diseases, with Moderna's market value jumping by roughly $30 billion following the trial announcement.
