Moderna-Merck Cancer Vaccine Shines in Late-Stage Melanoma Trial
Moderna and Merck's experimental personalized cancer vaccine has shown significant promise in its late-stage trial for melanoma. The mRNA-based vaccine, combined with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda, met its primary goals in a trial involving over 1,100 high-risk or advanced melanoma patients.
The treatment, which is designed to target the unique mutations found in an individual patient's tumor, significantly extended recurrence-free survival compared to Keytruda alone and reduced the chances of cancer spreading to other parts of the body. The vaccine was well-tolerated with minimal side effects, a welcome change from many other vaccine trials.
The success of this trial brings Moderna and Merck one step closer to filing for approval of their treatment option. With melanoma considered one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer, affecting over 1.5 million people in the US alone in 2023, this development is a significant breakthrough. Following the promising results, Moderna stock soared more than 10 percent and Merck rose over 1 percent in premarket trading.
