Moderna-Merck Melanoma Vaccine Trial Yields Promising Interim Results
Moderna and Merck's partnership has yielded promising results in their late-stage trial for a melanoma vaccine. The combination of Moderna's personalized mRNA cancer therapy, developed with Merck, and Keytruda significantly reduced the risk of melanoma recurrence and spread compared to using Keytruda alone.
The interim results showed a statistically significant improvement, causing Moderna's shares to soar nearly 90% and Merck's to gain 10%. Analysts are optimistic about the potential for this treatment, citing its potential to change the way cancer is treated more broadly.
However, not all analysts are as enthusiastic. Geoffrey Meacham of Citi pointed out that while the trial results were positive, they did not establish how much value should be assigned to Intismeran and the broader oncology platform.
Andrew Tsai of Jefferies expects the vaccine for melanoma to enter the market in 2027 and estimates its peak sales potential at multi-billion dollars on a majority market share. Lale Akooner, Global Market Strategist for eToro, noted that while the result is a major confidence boost for investors, retail investors should keep expectations measured due to the lack of full trial data and manufacturing complexities.
Art Hogan, Chief Market Strategist at B Riley Wealth in NY, welcomed the news as great early-stage news for Moderna, which has been struggling since the post-pandemic timeframe.
