Moderna-Merck mRNA Shot Shows Promising Results in Melanoma Trial
Moderna and Merck's jointly developed mRNA shot has shown promising results in the first Phase 3 trial of a personalized cancer vaccine. The combination of this vaccine with Keytruda, an established immunotherapy, hit its primary goals in over 1,100 patients at high risk or with advanced melanoma who had undergone surgery to remove all visible tumors.
The study aimed to reduce the risk of melanoma recurrence and spread to other parts of the body. According to Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel, 'It's a big moment for medicine, a big moment for patients.'
Investors reacted positively to the news, with Moderna's stock soaring over 120% in morning trading, while Merck's shares climbed more than 10%. The differing market values of the two companies, $25 billion and $333 billion respectively, contributed to these varying price movements.
