Moderna, Merck's mRNA Melanoma Vaccine Hurdles Remain Despite Breakthrough
Moderna and Merck's personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, Intismeran, has shown promising results in a phase 3 clinical trial. The vaccine, designed to match the unique genetic characteristics of each patient's cancer, reduced the risk of melanoma recurrence by an unspecified amount in about 1,137 patients.
The breakthrough is significant because it applies mRNA technology used in COVID-19 vaccines to cancer treatment for the first time. Intismeran is administered after surgical removal of the tumor and helps the immune system locate and attack any remaining cancer cells.
However, experts caution that challenges remain before the vaccine can be widely used. Seth Cheetham, associate professor at the University of Queensland, said, 'the key challenge is manufacturing time.' It takes several months to collect tumor tissue, analyze its mutations, and produce a customized vaccine for each patient.
