Moderna Raises $2 Billion for Oncology Growth Amid Stock Price Volatility
Moderna has announced plans to raise $2 billion through convertible notes to fund its growing oncology business and repay debt. The financing comes after a major clinical win for the company's mRNA cancer vaccine, which met the main goals of a pivotal Phase 3 melanoma study.
The convertible notes will mature in 2032, but Moderna may increase them to $2.3 billion if additional buyers purchase more notes. To reduce dilution risk for existing shareholders, the company plans to buy a capped-call hedge covering its shares. While some of the proceeds will cover this cost, Moderna expects to use the remainder to expand its oncology business and repay debt.
The funding is part of Moderna's efforts to grow its oncology pipeline, which includes nine studies with Merck covering melanoma, lung, bladder, kidney, pancreatic, and gastric cancers. Some retail investors are skeptical about this move, calling it a 'bull trap' that may lead to further stock price declines.
Moderna's stock has gained around 380% so far in 2026, but the company's plans have not gone unnoticed by all investors. While some see potential in Moderna's oncology growth, others are more cautious about the risks associated with this financing deal.
