Moderna Soars on Cancer Breakthrough, But Analysts Warn of Patience Required
Moderna's (MRNA) stock surged 176.97% on Wednesday following a breakthrough in its mRNA cancer therapy, intismeran autogene, or mRNA-4157/V940. This technology, developed alongside Merck (MRK), met its primary recurrence-free survival endpoint in a late-stage melanoma trial.
The key to this innovation is that it's not a one-size-fits-all cancer drug. Moderna and Merck create a treatment tailored to the mutations found in each patient's tumor, instructing cells to produce selected cancer-specific neoantigens. The goal is to train the immune system to recognize those targets and hunt down residual cancer cells.
Moderna and Merck are already testing this personalized mRNA approach in other cancers, including lung, bladder, and kidney cancer. However, analysts expect a possible launch of intismeran autogene as late as 2027, with meaningful oncology revenue arriving later in the decade.
