Moderna Stock Jumps on Melanoma Trial Success and Vaccine Approval
Moderna shares saw a moderate increase of nearly 4% on Tuesday after two major developments pushed the stock upward. The biotech company's partnership with Merck announced promising Phase 3 trial results for their mRNA-based melanoma treatment, sparking optimism about Moderna's cancer-focused development programs.
The second catalyst for the surge was the approval by U.S. regulators of Moderna's updated COVID-19 vaccine, providing a marketable product ahead of the upcoming respiratory illness season. Trading activity was subdued, however, with approximately 2.4 million shares changing hands, representing an 79% decline from the typical daily volume.
Despite this boost, analyst consensus remains cautious, with a mean price objective of $80.53, significantly below current market levels. Multiple financial institutions have adjusted their forecasts higher but maintain a guarded position. The pharmaceutical powerhouse GSK has also advanced its proprietary mRNA-based influenza vaccine into Phase III clinical trials, presenting an emerging challenge to Moderna's dominance in the therapeutic category.
