Moderna Stock Swings Outrun Analyst Price Targets
Moderna's stock price has been swinging wildly since the company's landmark melanoma data drop, but analysts' price targets remain below market value. The stock shed 5.6% on Wednesday to close at €128.42, its third sharp move in three sessions.
The decline came without any fresh company-specific news or explanation from the broader market. This volatility follows a historic spike after Moderna and Merck unveiled positive Phase 3 results for their melanoma treatment combination on August 19. The stock responded with a single-day gain of roughly 177%, nearly tripling in value within one session.
The question now is whether one positive study justifies a wholesale re-rating of the company. Moderna's president, Stephen Hoge, said additional readouts in other tumor types are expected within the next two years, but no specific dates were given. The company is already testing intismeran in non-small cell lung cancer, bladder cancer, and renal cell carcinoma.
The bull case rests on the possibility that this becomes the first late-stage clinical success for an mRNA cancer vaccine, forcing a fundamental reassessment of Moderna's entire oncology pipeline. If regulatory discussions proceed smoothly, intismeran could become the first commercial mRNA cancer therapeutic and diversify Moderna's revenue base.
The bear case is about timing and transferability, with no further readouts expected for up to two years, leaving the stock exposed to setbacks in other tumor types or delays in the regulatory process. The underlying business has been overshadowed by the oncology narrative, with Moderna posting second-quarter revenue of $145 million, up 2% year over year.
