Moderna's Cancer Vaccine Scores Breakthrough in Phase 3 Trial
Moderna's cancer vaccine, developed in partnership with Merck, has achieved success in a Phase 3 clinical trial. The personalized mRNA vaccine, called intismeran autogene, was tested on 1,137 high-risk melanoma patients and showed a significant reduction in the risk of recurrence and spread.
The vaccine works by analyzing each patient's tumor to identify unique genetic mutations and using algorithms to select up to 34 markers that trigger an immune response. This information is then used to manufacture a bespoke vaccine designed to train the immune system to recognize and attack residual cancer cells.
Preliminary results from the trial showed that patients receiving the combination therapy of Keytruda and intismeran autogene outperformed those receiving Keytruda alone in extending recurrence-free survival. The companies expect to begin discussions with regulators in the coming months, with potential approval as early as 2027.
The success of this vaccine marks a significant milestone for Moderna and Merck, which could potentially generate $3 billion in melanoma revenue by 2035, according to Barclays estimates.
