MOL's First Wind-Powered LNG Carrier Named Ahead of Delivery to Chevron
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that it held a naming ceremony for the world's first LNG carrier equipped with Wind Challenger, a wind-assisted propulsion system. The vessel, FUJIN SAILOR, was formally named by Ms. Molly T. Laegeler, President of Chevron's Supply & Trading business and the vessel's Godmother.
The FUJIN SAILOR is the first LNG carrier to be equipped with Wind Challenger and also the world's first vessel of any type to have two units of the system installed. The vessel represents a significant milestone in the application of wind-assisted propulsion technology to LNG transportation, reflecting the collaborative efforts of MOL, Chevron, and Hanwha Ocean.
MOL has set a target of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 and plans to launch 25 vessels equipped with Wind Challenger by 2030, increasing to 80 by 2035. The FUJIN SAILOR is scheduled for delivery under a long-term charter contract to Chevron at the end of September 2026.
