MOL's FUJIN SAILOR Makes History as First LNG Carrier with Wind-Assisted Propulsion
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has made history by naming its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier equipped with two units of Wind Challenger, a hard sail wind-assisted propulsion system.
The vessel, named FUJIN SAILOR, was formally named at a ceremony on September 10, 2026, at Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd.’s Geoje Shipyard in South Korea. The ship is scheduled for delivery to Chevron Corporation (Chevron) by the end of September 2026 under a long-term charter contract.
The Wind Challenger system is expected to reduce fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional propulsion alone. This milestone marks a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of LNG shipping, as MOL has set a target of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
