Monarch Butterfly Population Plummets to Near-Record Low

The Western Monarch butterfly population has hit a near-record low of just over 12,000, according to recent tracking. This count is the third-lowest since monitoring began in 1997.

Scientists are seeking public assistance to help researchers better understand where these butterflies and their caterpillars can be found throughout the year. The California State Parks Foundation has asked citizens to report any Monarch sightings, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem.
