Monarch Caterpillars Hatch and Feed on Milkweed in Preparation for Migration

The monarch butterfly's life cycle is a fascinating process that involves four distinct stages. The story begins with tiny white eggs laid by a mother monarch on milkweed leaves, which will serve as their primary food source. These eggs hatch into caterpillars within 10 to 14 days, and the caterpillars feed exclusively on the milkweed's toxic leaves for this brief period.

As the caterpillars grow, they shed their skin multiple times to accommodate their increasing size. Eventually, they will detach from the milkweed and search for a safe location to pupate, often settling under sturdy shelter or in a shrub. This is a crucial stage, as the caterpillar will transform into a chrysalis within 10 to 30 feet of its previous resting place.

The monarch butterfly's incredible migration journey begins with the 'super generation,' which emerges from this final stage of development. These butterflies will travel up to 2,000 miles to overwinter in Mexico and eventually return north, laying eggs and dying along the way. This remarkable process is a testament to nature's intricate design.
