Monrovia Still Awaits Investigation Into Day Laborer's Death After ICE Raid
One year has passed since Robert Carlos Montoya Valdez was killed near the Monrovia Home Depot in California, and his family's name continues to be a rallying call for immigration advocates.
Montoya, a 52-year-old father of four who had sent a video to his grandson just the day before, died after being struck by an SUV on the 210 freeway while fleeing from ICE agents in August 2025.
The city of Monrovia is still waiting for the release of the California Highway Patrol investigation into Montoya's death, which has been delayed multiple times since a public records request was submitted last April.
Advocates have organized a permanent memorial to Montoya and continue to protest the Trump administration's mass deportation policy, citing his death as an example of the broader impact of federal immigration enforcement on local communities.
