Chinese AI lab Moonshot has reportedly leased 20,000 Nvidia GPUs from Alibaba Cloud. According to people familiar with both companies' operations, the 'Hopper' generation of Nvidia GPUs, specifically H200s, make up a large proportion of Moonshot's total compute capacity used for training and running its Kimi models.

Moonshot launched its 2.8 trillion-parameter Kimi K3 open-source AI model in July, claiming it brings capabilities close to those of frontier models from US AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The Nvidia GPUs are used for the training and running of Moonshot's AI models, including the Kimi K3, which was launched in July. This move has significant implications for the field of artificial intelligence and highlights the growing importance of compute capacity in AI research.
