Moonshot Secures Nvidia Chip Deal with Alibaba Amid US Export Controls

Chinese AI firm Moonshot has secured access to about 20,000 Nvidia chips through its deal with Alibaba Group, according to Bloomberg News. The computing agreement is significant as it allows Moonshot to utilize a key portion of the computing power behind its Kimi models.

Moonshot's Kimi K3 model, unveiled earlier this month, is a 2.8-trillion-parameter AI system that surpasses Alibaba's Qwen on performance measures. However, the report states that Moonshot can access Nvidia's newer Blackwell processors through Southeast Asia and is seeking additional chips to train its next AI model.

The deal comes as U.S. export controls on advanced Nvidia chips have made access to computing power a constraint for Chinese companies. An Alibaba spokesperson told Reuters that the alleged supply of H200 chips to Moonshot from Nvidia is 'completely groundless.'
