Most Businesses Open on Labor Day Despite Some Closures

Labor Day is an annual commemoration of American workers' economic achievements. It's celebrated on the first Monday in September, and ahead of this federal holiday, there are specific businesses that will be open and closed.

Federal, state, and local government offices, as well as the US Post office, Bank branches, The New York Stock Exchange, and Nasdaq will be closed. Public schools and universities, FedEx, UPS, Costco, and some pharmacies at Walgreens and CVS will also be closed or have limited hours.

However, most major retailers and restaurant chains are open nationwide, including Walmart, Target, Aldi, Belk, Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, Kohl's, Kroger, Sam's Club (closes at 6 p.m. local times), and Whole Foods (with modified hours). Some restaurants like Big Lots, Trader Joe's, Albertsons Companies stores, and most major chains will also be open.

Labor Day became a federal holiday after President Grover Cleveland signed a law making it one on June 28, 1894. The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on September 5, 1882.
