Researchers at Merck and Moderna have announced promising results from human clinical trials using individualized mRNA vaccines that target melanoma, a type of skin cancer. These vaccines teach the body's immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells based on specific mutations found in each patient's tumor.
The process involves taking a blood sample and a biopsy of the tumor, extracting DNA and RNA from the cells, and sequencing them to identify unique mutations. A customized vaccine is then created containing mRNA instructions that instruct the body to produce antibodies against these mutated proteins.
Dr. Elias Sayour, a pediatric oncologist at the University of Florida, believes this technology could revolutionize cancer treatment. 'What this could be is an entire class of new drugs that's personalized, that makes incurable conditions curable,' he said.
