Mumbai Warehouse Raid Uncovers Falsified Food Exports
Indian authorities recently raided an illicit operation in Mumbai that was falsifying expiry dates and nutritional information on original food products manufactured by PepsiCo, Nestle, Coca-Cola, and Unilever to make them exportable.
The warehouse, run by Sadhana Enterprises, contained nearly 5,000 cartons of consumer products, including PepsiCo's Lay's and Kurkure chips, Nestle's Maggi Masala Noodles, and Coca-Cola's Thums Up and Limca cans. Officials found chemicals used to remove original dates and ingredient labels, as well as machines to print and apply replacements.
The operation is believed to have been done systematically for 19 little-known exporters, with most products being expired or near-expired. The authorities seized goods worth nearly US$80,000 during a six-day investigation.
