Nadella: AI Must Be Under Human Control to Be Worth Pursuing

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has weighed in on the debate over AI development, arguing that any pursuit of superintelligence must be grounded in human oversight and broad-based access. In a post on X, Nadella emphasized that AI should help humanity and remain under human control.

Nadella tied this principle to a call for spreading AI's benefits broadly across countries, communities, and companies. He suggested creating a 'frontier ecosystem' where both closed and open-source models can coexist and thrive.

Nadella also stressed the importance of enterprises retaining control over their proprietary knowledge when building on top of AI models. He advocated for organisations to build their own continuous learning loops while retaining the ability to embed their own knowledge into models and weights they control.

Microsoft's strategy, according to Nadella, is based on three pillars: broad access and choice at every layer of the AI stack, enterprise control over learning loops and models, and a Code of Conduct underlying Microsoft's first-party MAI models. The company will publish this Code of Conduct for public consultation.
