Nadella Joins Calls for Slowing Down AI Development Amid Safety Concerns
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has weighed in on the ongoing debate about the pace of artificial intelligence development, expressing support for embedded evaluators in AI systems to ensure safety and control.
Nadella's comments come amidst a flurry of statements from industry leaders, including OpenAI's Sam Altman, Tesla's Elon Musk, and Google's Demis Hassabis, who have advocated for slowing down the pace of AI development due to concerns about losing control.
In a post on X, Nadella emphasized that any pursuit of superintelligence must be grounded in the principle that AI systems should remain under human supervision and control. He also highlighted the need for broad access and choice at every layer of the AI stack, as well as enterprise control of learning loops and models.
Nadella's stance aligns with that of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has proposed a three-part plan to address concerns about AI safety, including giving ongoing employee-like access to embedded third-party evaluators, coordinating common safety standards, and achieving global coordination.
