Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has warned employees about AI safety in an internal memo. He emphasized that AI should remain under human control and endorsed broader third-party testing to ensure alignment and safety.

Nadella's comments follow dire warnings from some AI researchers, who said last week that the technology might kill all humans. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed slower AI development and allowed outside monitoring of its model progress. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman concurred on third-party monitoring and expressed support for slowing deployment when necessary to ensure alignment and safety.

Microsoft AI released a draft of its 37-page code of conduct for its 'humanist' AI models, which includes guidelines for governance, containment, and observability. Nadella emphasized that companies must take time to make the technology safe, saying 'As the stakes get higher, one should take all the time they need.'

He also highlighted the importance of making sure customers stay in control of their unique knowledge and data, allowing them to build their own continuous learning loops. Nadella mentioned that Microsoft's datacenter in Quincy is a good example of how companies can grow alongside local communities.
