Nadella's $43 Million Stock Sale: A Trading Plan, Not a Bearish Signal
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently sold approximately $43 million in company shares under a pre-arranged trading plan. The sale, which occurred on September 1, consisted of 86,525 Microsoft MSFT shares sold at weighted-average prices ranging from about $498.24 to $505.20.
The transaction is significant due to Nadella's high-profile status and the sheer amount of money involved, but investors should be cautious not to read too much into it. The sale was part of a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan adopted on March 8, which called for selling 80% of the net shares vesting from an August 31 performance-stock award.
Microsoft's underlying operating momentum remains strong, with fiscal fourth-quarter revenue increasing 18% to $90 billion and net income rising 31% to $35.8 billion. The company's cloud growth is particularly noteworthy, with Azure and other cloud-services revenue jumping 43%, and Microsoft Cloud revenue climbing 27% to $59.3 billion.
Investors should focus on the long-term trajectory of Microsoft's cloud growth, AI demand, and ability to convert infrastructure spending into durable earnings growth rather than placing too much emphasis on Nadella's sale.
