NASA and IBM have launched an open-source artificial intelligence model called the Lunar Foundation Model to aid researchers in mapping lunar craters, volcanic formations, and areas with potential lunar ice.

The model was trained on decades of lunar observations from multiple instruments at different resolutions, providing a shared starting point for specialized lunar-research tools.

According to IBM's announcement, the foundation model combines relationships across different types and resolutions of lunar data, allowing researchers to adapt it to particular scientific questions instead of developing a separate system for every project.
