NASA and IBM Unleash Lunar Discovery with Open-Source AI Model
IBM and NASA have collaborated to develop an open-source AI model that analyzes decades of lunar observations, helping scientists identify features and accelerate exploration.
The model, called the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, was trained on a vast dataset of lunar observation data curated by IBM and NASA researchers. This allows scientists to work across complex, multi-instrument data and uncover relationships and patterns that may have gone unnoticed.
The Moon has been continuously observed for decades, with sensors and instruments generating petabytes of data on its surface and subsurface. However, analyzing this information traditionally requires manual sifting through maps and images or lower-resolution machine learning models.
The NASA-IBM model addresses these limitations by bringing multimodal and multi-resolution lunar observations into a common framework. In testing, it outperformed widely used approaches by up to 23 percent when identifying key geographic features, including potential ice deposits, craters, and volcanic formations.
