NASA and IBM Unveil AI Model to Aid Lunar Research
NASA and IBM have collaborated on an open-source AI model to aid lunar research. The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model is designed to analyze data from various missions and support human presence on the Moon.
The model was trained on over 30 layers of data collected by nine instruments on four NASA missions, including the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
This tool can help researchers identify ice deposits in permanently shadowed regions, map craters for safe landing sites, and study volcanic features.
In benchmark tests, the model accurately identified key lunar surface features up to 23% more effectively than other methods.
