NASA and IBM Unveil AI Model to Unlock Lunar Data Secrets
NASA and IBM have collaborated to create an artificial intelligence model that can process decades of lunar data. The AI, known as the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, is designed to help scientists prepare for a long-term human presence on the Moon.
The model was trained on a unified dataset created by combining more than 30 layers of spatial data from nine different instruments across four separate lunar missions. This allows researchers to spot hidden patterns across all measurements at once, making it easier to identify potential ice deposits and safe landing zones.
The AI is particularly effective in finding craters and steep slopes on the Moon's surface, which is crucial for NASA's Artemis mission planners. The model even identifies unusual volcanic features that can provide insights into the Moon's history.
The technology is open-source, making it accessible to researchers around the world without requiring a massive computing budget. IBM and NASA hope this will accelerate discovery across the space industry by providing a shared foundation for lunar research.
