A new AI model developed by NASA and IBM is set to revolutionize the study of the Moon. The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model is an open-source tool that can quickly analyze vast amounts of data, making it easier for scientists to understand the Moon's surface better.
Trained on 17 years of data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), the model can identify key geographic features on the Moon's surface, including potential ice deposits, craters, and volcanic formations. This is a significant improvement over previous methods, which were up to 23% less accurate.
The model can also help scientists plan future lunar missions by identifying safe landing sites and predicting where ice may be hidden in the Moon's permanently shadowed regions. This is crucial for building a sustained presence on the lunar surface, as water and oxygen will be essential resources for astronauts.
