NASA-IBM Collaboration Releases Open-Source AI Model for Lunar Exploration
IBM and NASA have collaborated to release an open-source AI model called the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model. This model is designed to support lunar exploration by turning decades of complex, multi-instrument data into insights that can help scientists identify key geographic features on the Moon's surface.
The model has been trained on a dataset curated by IBM and NASA researchers, which includes over 30 spatially-aligned layers from nine instruments across four missions. This dataset combines tens of thousands of images and maps showing unique geophysical properties of the lunar surface.
The model has shown to be highly effective in identifying key features such as potential ice deposits, craters, and volcanic formations on the Moon's surface. In fact, it exceeds widely used methods by up to 23% in identifying these features.
According to Kevin Murphy, Chief Science Data Officer at NASA Headquarters, 'NASA has spent decades building an extraordinary scientific record of the Moon, but collecting data is only part of the job.' He further added that the model shows what's possible when AI is brought to NASA's petabytes of scientific data.
