NASA Unveils Boeing 777 Airborne Research Laboratory for Global Atmospheric Studies
NASA has unveiled its new Boeing 777 airborne research laboratory to replace the retired Douglas DC-8. The aircraft, built in 2003 and previously used by Japan Airlines, was acquired by NASA in 2025 after a study highlighted the need for a large aircraft capable of carrying remote sensing and gas sampling instruments.
The Boeing 777 will be used for a range of atmospheric projects, including sensor development, satellite sensor calibration, data product validation, and field studies to better understand Earth system processes. The aircraft's long-range capabilities will enable data collection in truly global reach, allowing NASA to study severe winter weather and Arctic systems.
The new laboratory is currently undergoing modifications at L3Harris Technologies in Texas before being ferried back to the NASA Langley Research Centre based in Hampton, Virginia. The first mission, known as NURTURE, will focus on tracking severe weather development by investigating how atmospheric disturbances near the Arctic interact with mid-latitude air masses.
