NASA's Colloid Research in Space Leads to Breakthroughs for Consumer Products

NASA's research on colloids, which includes everyday products like toothpaste and salad dressing, has led to breakthroughs in understanding how mixtures behave without gravity. In 2001, a NASA experiment was sent to the International Space Station (ISS) to study the properties of colloids.

The ISS provided an ideal environment for researchers to analyze particle settling and separation, which is difficult to do on Earth due to gravity's effects. Procter & Gamble (P&G) partnered with NASA to conduct further research, funding experiments that would help them design products that don't separate over time.

Over the course of six experiments conducted from 2013 onwards, P&G researchers used the ISS's confocal microscope to create three-dimensional images of colloids in microgravity. They gathered data on particle sizes and stirring rates under different temperatures, producing results that couldn't be replicated on Earth.

The research led to three patents being approved in 2019, with P&G using the findings to improve their products' stability. The partnership between NASA and P&G demonstrates how space-based research can have practical applications for everyday life.
