NASCAR Fines Jimmie Johnson $10,000 for Blocking Powerade Bottle
NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson was fined $10,000 in 2004 for blocking a Powerade bottle from camera view during his victory lane celebration at Pocono.
The incident occurred when Johnson, who was sponsored by Gatorade, placed a Lowe's sign in front of the oversized Powerade bottle on his No. 48 Chevrolet after crossing the finish line with 124 laps to go out of 200.
NASCAR viewed this as a marketing ploy and penalized Johnson for not following post-race protocols. The sanctioning body was protecting its official sports drink sponsor, Powerade, which is a Coca-Cola brand.
This clash highlights the fierce rivalry between Coca-Cola and PepsiCo in NASCAR, with drivers often caught between their personal sponsorship commitments and the need to honor their team's sponsors.
