Nationwide, a UK-based building society, has implemented Microsoft 365 Copilot across its workforce to enhance employee experiences and outcomes for its 19 million members. The company replaced 'decades-old' core banking systems during the rollout, moving services to the cloud and rebuilding customer data.

The implementation also involved bringing in Virgin Money as part of a takeover completed in April 2026, which added five million new customers to Nationwide's base.

According to Paul Ballard, chief technology officer at Nationwide, 'We have to do it where people don’t even know it’s happened.' He emphasized that the goal is to maintain steady banking experiences for members while undergoing significant behind-the-scenes changes.

The company has moved 15 million customer records from its former core banking engine and is gearing up to integrate an additional five million Virgin Money customers. Nationwide has consolidated 19 separate data stores onto Microsoft Azure and Azure Databricks, creating a unified cloud-based data platform.
