Tokyo-based electronics maker NEC Corporation has ceased development of quantum computer hardware as of March this year. The decision was made due to the numerous challenges facing practical implementation, including the lack of a dominant hardware approach.

NEC had been at the forefront of quantum computing research since 1999 when it demonstrated the world's first superconducting qubit, paving the way for other major players like Google and IBM. However, despite its initial success, NEC has now concluded that continuing to invest in this area will not yield expected profits.

The company will continue to explore quantum mechanics through technological development, but it appears to be shifting focus away from hardware.
