Network Controls Key to Containing AI-Driven Exploits, Microsoft Warns
Microsoft and its cloud platform Azure are urging organizations to implement network controls before patching vulnerabilities in their systems. This is due to the growing velocity of vulnerabilities, which has been accelerated by artificial intelligence (AI) that automates exploitation of simple, known weaknesses.
Cybersecurity experts say that the traditional approach of relying solely on endpoint controls is no longer sufficient. They argue that network protections are more effective in containing incidents before they can be fully remediated.
Azure's vice president for Azure Networking, Igor Sakhnov, said that network controls can often be implemented faster than enterprise software patches can be validated and deployed. He emphasized that the objective is not to avoid patching but to create a meaningful layer of defense during the period when patching has not yet been completed.
Experts also stress the importance of using AI-native solutions to mitigate threats, respond to incidents, and triage telemetry from traditional security monitoring tools. This can help incident responders understand complex relationships within systems and make fast, informed decisions.
