Nevada Demands Evidence from Feds on Alleged Non-Citizen Voters

Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar has written to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, asking for evidence to support allegations that thousands of non-citizen voters are registered in Nevada. The request comes after Mullin sent a letter stating that there may be as many as 15,903 ineligible non-citizens on the state's voter rolls and that 8,576 voters matched non-citizens in federal databases.

Aguilar asked for more information about how the government arrived at these figures and requested details about the sources used to identify non-citizens. He also pointed out that Nevada does not provide Social Security numbers of its voters, making it unclear how officials would use this information to verify citizenship.

The exchange of letters comes as President Trump has been pushing for stricter voter ID laws and has called on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require documentary proof of citizenship before registering to vote. Aguilar also referenced a recent case in New Jersey where a software glitch allowed over 6,000 non-citizens to register and more than 400 to cast ballots.

Nevada has safeguards in place to prevent similar incidents from happening, according to Aguilar, including using different vendors for voter registration and having processes in place to check the work of the state and DMV. However, he emphasized that any collaborative effort with the Department of Homeland Security must be designed to minimize false positives and comply fully with Nevada law.
