New Jersey Woman Loses $50,000 in Elaborate Microsoft Scam
A New Jersey woman fell victim to an elaborate scam after scammers convinced her that her bank accounts had been compromised.
The scheme began when a Microsoft error message took over her computer screen and displayed a phone number to call, according to the police report.
A woman claiming to work for Microsoft told the victim that her bank accounts were in danger and then transferred the call to a man posing as a Wells Fargo employee.
The victim eventually mailed a cashier's check for $50,000. When scammers returned asking for another $30,000, police were already involved and arrested one of the suspects, Gurdutt Singh, 24, from New York.
