New Mexico Democrats Urge Apple and Google to Keep State Name Intact

A group of Democratic lawmakers from New Mexico has asked Apple and Google to keep the state's name, New Mexico, intact on their map platforms. In a letter addressed to the CEOs of both companies, the lawmakers expressed concern that President Trump's proposed renaming of the state to 'New America' could lead to changes in how the state is identified.

The lawmakers pointed out that changing the state's name would require amending New Mexico's Constitution through its own constitutional process. They argued that the United States Constitution does not give the President the power to unilaterally rename a state, and that an executive order cannot change the legal identity of New Mexico.

Apple and Google have previously changed the names of Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico for users in the U.S. after receiving requests from President Trump. The lawmakers asked Apple Maps and Google Maps to publicly commit to keeping New Mexico's name intact, regardless of any pressure or requests from the President.
