News Outlets Take On OpenAI and Microsoft Over Alleged Copyright Infringement
Two major US news organizations, The Seattle Times and Newsday, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft over allegations of copyright infringement. According to the complaint, the companies used articles from these publications without permission to train their AI systems.
The news outlets claim that their websites were scraped, including content available only to paying subscribers. They argue that AI tools can reproduce or closely rewrite their work, potentially reducing the need for readers to visit their websites or pay for subscriptions.
Seattle Times President and CEO Alan Fisco wrote in a statement that 'we feel strongly that we must defend our content, which we spend millions of dollars a year to produce, from being used without our consent or compensation.'
