Newsday Sues OpenAI and Microsoft Over AI-Generated Content

Newsday and The Seattle Times have filed a joint lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement by their AI products. The complaint, filed in federal court in Manhattan, claims that the tech companies' AI models reproduce news articles without compensation or permission.

The lawsuit states that OpenAI's AI models ingest copyrighted content from news outlets, often verbatim, which threatens to destroy independent journalism. Attorneys for Newsday and The Seattle Times argue that if allowed to succeed, this could lead to the demise of their publications.

Representatives for OpenAI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The lawsuit is seeking an unspecified amount of damages and court orders to impound and/or destroy data sets and AI models containing news articles from Newsday and The Seattle Times.
